Don't Toss That Bottle: Creative Ways to Reuse Empty Essential Oil Bottles

Earth Day is a good reminder that small habits add up. If you use essential oils regularly, you probably have a collection of those beautiful little amber glass bottles quietly accumulating in a drawer. Before you toss them, consider this: those bottles still have life in them, and with a little creativity, they can become some of your most useful aromatherapy tools.

Here are two of our favorite ways to give empty essential oil bottles a second purpose.

Tip 1: Make a Portable Carrier Oil Blend

When a bottle is empty, there's almost always a little residual scent clinging to the glass and the orifice reducer. Put that to work. Fill the bottle with your carrier oil of choice, such as jojoba, fractionated coconut oil, or sweet almond oil. The trace amount of essential oil left behind will lend a subtle, lovely scent to your carrier, giving you a ready-to-use moisturizing oil that's perfect for on-the-go skin care, a quick hand massage, or a pulse-point application.

It's a zero-waste win: you get a useful product, and nothing goes to waste.

Tip 2: Make Sniffy Salts

Earth Day tip card: Make sniffy salts with an empty essential oil bottle, Epsom salt, and Spearmint

Sniffy salts are a simple, portable way to enjoy aromatherapy anywhere. Think of them as a personal inhaler you make yourself, using what you already have.

Here's how:

  1. Make sure your empty bottle is clean and dry.
  2. Fill it with Epsom salt.
  3. Add 4 drops of your favorite refreshing essential oil. Spearmint is a wonderful choice, bright and cooling, but Peppermint, Eucalyptus, or Lemon work beautifully too.
  4. Replace the cap and shake well to distribute the oil through the salt.
  5. Open the cap and inhale whenever you need a moment of clarity, a midday refresh, or just a whiff of something that makes you feel good.

The salt absorbs the essential oil and releases the scent slowly, so your sniffy salts will stay fragrant for weeks. When the scent fades, just add a few more drops.

A Few More Ideas

  • Roller bottle: Remove the orifice reducer, add a roller ball fitment (available in our supplies collection), fill with a diluted blend, and you have a custom roll-on.
  • Room spray base: Fill with witch hazel or distilled water, add 10 to 15 drops of essential oil, and use as a linen or room spray. Shake before each use.
  • Drawer sachet: Fill with dried herbs or rice, add a few drops of your favorite oil, and tuck into a drawer or closet for a natural fragrance boost.

Why It Matters

Amber or blue glass is infinitely recyclable, but reusing is always better than recycling. Every bottle you repurpose is one less item in the waste stream, and one more small, intentional choice that adds up over time. Happy Earth Day.
